Some say that playing too many video games will melt your brain and make you dumb. In my opinion, video games can actually be really good for your brain and comprehension skills, as well as your reaction time and reflexes.
There are many action/shooter games, such as Call of Duty and Halo that test your reflexes with quick, high intensity levels and missions. These games keep players their toes at all times and require them to make quick decisions and react quickly.
A lot of action games also require a lot of strategy and decision making skills. As players get good at making decisions and reacting quickly it will help them not only in the game, but in real life as well.
Studies show that frequent players of these types of games react up to 25% faster than non-players. In one study, a group of players and a group of non-players were shown a screen of small black dots moving erratically. Members from both groups were asked which way the dots were migrating. The group of action game players answered (correctly) an average of 30% faster than the non-players.
A different study tested comprehension skills of players and non-players. members from both groups were shown photos of different scenes and were asked to comprehend what was going on in the picture. Action game players responded with more logical and accurate explanations.
Games like these can also improve hand-eye coordination. You have to react to things happening on the screen by pressing specific buttons on a controller. Sometimes plays are pressured to do this very quickly which can be challenging.
There are several benefits to playing video games and they can help you in the real world as well.
